What an awesome combo. I used this today for 9 hours on a private charter out of Dana Point. It easily brought in bass, barracuda, bonito, rock fish and mackerel. Probably a bit overkill actually. Lever drag worked really well and the number values were consistent when resetting drag. Clicker worked great. Rod has rollers on the first and last guides. Can’t wait to use it again.

Bought this for a Florida charter fishing boat trip. Rod worked great and even fit in the rod holder on the boat great. The slotted rubber end fit nicely in the cable under the rod holder to prevent the rod from spinning during travel. I used a spinning reel with this which was a great choice because a ship mate showed me how I could cast out about 40-50 yards from the boat and possibly catch something bigger and better away from the boat. Rod had good sensitivity and strength to detect small sand perch and strength to land large snapper. Update 1/2024 finally came back to Florida to fish after Covid and the hurricane. The rod was hung on the bedroom wall since using it in 2020. Took it out fishing and discovered all the eyelets for the line are cracked and the ring has fallen out on 5 of the 7 eyelets! Not impressed with Penn products at all!!

Good protection for reel. Don't know why Penn couldn't just post the attached list/picture of which cover size is recommended on which of their reels.

Receive the wrong reel. Ordered the one with line counter. I got no line counter.

So I have been waiting to write a review on this product, for when I really got to test it out. I purchased the squall 30LW combo and took it with me on a deep sea fishing trip. We headed out 20-25 miles to do some snapper and grouper fishing. I brought this rod for grouper. A adjusted the drag to fully locked with no problems. Tested it by having a friend pull the line and it seemed to work flawlessly. I was using 60lb mono, with a 4oz weight to get to the reef. I dropped the line and it came off the spool with no effort. First fish was a 25 inch gag grouper, that was NO problem cranking up with this combo. FINALLY I got to put it to the test, and put aside my worry that it would handle a decent sized fish. 35in gag grouper took the bait and lost to this reel. Man am I happy with this combo. Handled the fish as I had hoped for, didn't lock up. Even under the pressure of a good sized fish, I was able to crank without fault. The level wind continued to do its job throughout the fight. This rod will definitely be going with me on any future trips. Anyone looking for a nice combo that can handle (i think) up to 60lb mono this is it. The reel has 20lbs of drag, and the rod is rated for 20-50lb line. With the drag locked down, the rod and reel both handled exceptionally well under the pressure! Attached is the 35in grouper thanks to the Penn Squall 30LW Combo!

Medium is a very loose fit on torque 40nld2. also fathom 40nld2. A little loose but 2 speed gearing is covered (in photos). Edit: bought small and extra small locally and I'm satisfied how xs fits fathom 25nld2. Xxs is too small for 25nld2. Xxs fits fathom 12. Small is a snug fit on 40nld2. Much better fit than medium.

I don't know if it was damaged and refurbished or if this rod is just bad to begin with, if you want to buy a good rod at this price you have more choices, I chose this rod just because my girlfriend likes it its color,

I recently started surf fishing so I bought this Penn rod. It’s sturdy as can be but still has a great flexibility for tossing out different sizes of lures and baits!

Works for SoCal surf fishing. The live liner is smooth and delicate. Line feeds super easy. The fish can actually pull your line easily unlike the Spinfisher (I calibrated the live liner function and it was still too heavy on the lowest settings possible).

So I did a bunch of research for a new boat casting rod and with budget and needs I settled on PENN carnage 6”6 medium heavy rod boat casting, rates for 50-130 braid. Paired that with a PENN fathom 25lw. I LOVE THIS COMBO! I primarily chunk and bottom fish in New England. I’ve caught many fish on this rod including sea bass, fluke, and porgies and some big stripers. Landed a 39” bass today and the rod was perfect and very sensitive. I would highly recommend this rod for someone who wants to fish anything but requires the backbone for a larger fish hook up. Highly recommended!

Love this rod. Have used it for many months now. Bought this back in March of 19 but noticed a few months back that the 3rd guide from the tip had lost its insert and was cracked. I have no idea when or how this happened. Still functions ok but has me worried.

  • I have so many reels, specially from Penn. This is by far the quiets of them all. I hooked a large mouth and it was so fun. Made the reel cry. So much fun to use small reels while catching big fish. I will recommend.
