Maybe it's a fluke, but after fishing with this reel for exactly 5 times, it no longer turns smoothly. I suspect a poor-quality gear or bearing. Under load, while retrieving a lure, the reel in-explicitly developed a "rough" spot. Not impressed with Penn's current build quality. I have a Penn 750 SS metal that I've fishing "heavily" for over 30 years and it performs flawlessly to this day with routine annual lubrication. I've caught literally, hundreds of salmon, bluefish, and big stripped bass on this reel. It never failed me. Of course, it was made in the U.S.A. with high quality parts back then. Not anymore! Penn's reels are now made in China! Quality control is suspect and I'll bet the parts are sub-par. I have a replacement 650 SS on order with my return. I'll give it one more shot. If that reel gives me problems, back it goes to pennoutlet.com and I'll have to look elsewhere for a decent quality reel. I predict Penn's demise if they don't improve the quality of their reels. A shame, since they've been in business since 1933.

Great reel for pier fishing. Took some practice to re-learn how to cast it, but a true classic!

Great rod/reel combo for the price. Reel needed some manual adjustment and rod is fairly stiff, but did the trick on a west coast charter boat for 1 to 5 lb rockfish -- could have also handled larger fish.
