pennoutlet.com was very understanding and swapped the product for me, free of charge. This time the packaging was 10x’s better and everything was as expected! Was excited to finally be able to purchase this combo. However, upon unboxing, I noticed the bail on the reel was completely smashed into the spool. Box was in good condition. Had to be packaged in this shape from the factory. Giving 2 stars due to rod being in good condition.(No defects/breaks). Did request a replacement so we will see what condition it will arrive in. Possible update soon.

Very light but sturdy. I use it for offshore fishing and I have no complaints. Grip feels very comfortable, especially for my big hands. Would buy again.

I love Penn products, especially their reels. I own 7 altogether. As with the other reels I own, the reel is strong and has good power. The retrieve is a little slower, which I think is great for working Pencils and Striper Swipers, its also great for bottom fishing. The reel is a little heavier when compared to my other reels of same line class. I've caught some nice Stripers, Blues and a couple nice Fluke. Its easy to breakdown and maintain and can take a beating. Would've liked a little more than just 10lbs of drag without buying the heavier series, but it works and smooth when greased. Its a good all around reel, even though it does get a little heavy while pluging for a couple hours, but best suited for bottom/bait fishing.

I waited a good year or so to post a review on this real, bought the 60 Size in Left Hand, cause I've used spin-cast my entire left and I'm muscle trained to reel with my left arm/hand. Purchased this as my first offshore "Trolling" Reel, and when I use it, it's getting abused because I use head boats that cruse at 10 to 15 knots on the ocean for 3 hours at a time before making their first stops for what ever it is in season. I've had fair amount of success with this reel and haven't had any "mechanical" issues, just the "idiot" owner issues not knowing how to use the drags correctly causing backlashes during trolling on a hook-up, lost a giant Wahoo because of such mistakes, but that's how we learn! It wasn't until May of 19 where she was really put through her paces, trolling and sharking. Paired with 50lb Ande Monster Mono (After wasting money on braid with back-lashing, again, my fault), hooked up to 3x 150+ lb Black-Fin Sharks, now being left-handed all my life on spin-cast, man handled the hell out of them with no major fuss and they where the larges "fish" species caught to date with it. Paired mine up with an Penn Ally ALLBW50100C60BB (not cheap but sooooo worth it), and just love the presentation of the gold color and functionality. Could you buy cheaper stuff, sure... Do you want quality stuff, then buy this and don't look back! And be ready for High-Fives and stepping into the world of "big fish"! Buy Buy Buy!!!

I love this combo. Great set up for a great price. I purchased two of these light action 6’6” combos. Only problem is, I have broken both rods (tip) so far while fishing. One was while dealing with a snag. I can say that was my fault. I should have been more careful and gentle. But this morning I broke the second rod reeling in a decent bass. Some may say user error. I say these rods are overly delicate and should be more durable. Well, time to shop for another rod. The Penn Battle reel is a trooper. Love this small reel. If pennoutlet.com or Penn would like to send me a replacement rod I would appreciate it😇. I am not able to find just the rod for purchase. It is out of the return window as I purchased this last one in October 2024. All in all, I am still a Penn loyalist when it comes to their reels.

I’m impressed. Love it! I was looking for a 40-80lbs rod for my 8000 reel. This rod is light. Tough. Sturdy. The tip is not too stiff. More like moderate action. Nice stainless eyes. Fumble butt. The lower grip is round EVA. The foreword grip is a rounded triangular EVA grip. Fits your hands very comfortable. I have one more of these coming in two days. I’ve bought many rods (UglyStiks) from pennoutlet.com. All came in a box. This rod only came zip tied to a sturdy V-shaped cardboard. It checked out and no damage to the eyes. Thank God! Not sure why…pennoutlet.com always puts rods in a box. Either way…awesome rod. What can you say - it’s a Penn. So go buy one and go hook some lip. Mine is the 7ft boat rod.

The reel cover is of excellent quality and waterproof, providing reliable protection. However, it may appear bulky on smaller to medium-sized reels, particularly those ranging from size 10 to 40.

Just went out on a halfday to break in the Fathom15 and the thing was casting great, tossing the Tady AA surface iron a mile. The reel took probably about 250 yds of 50lb powerpro braid and probably around 20 yds of 30lb mono topshot. Had no problem dragging in the bonito and calico with ease. Even ended up hooking into a yellow and the rod I what was bent over and probably coulda used one slightly more heavy duty but the reel did absolutely great. I also had brought my relatively new Daiwa Lexa on the same rod as well and ended up not even touching it because I was loving the fathom too much.

I put a Penn Fathom 2 20lw on this pole and can reliably cast over 100 yards using a 6oz Sputnik sinker and 50lb braided line.

Initial review. No issues with packaging or delivery. Reel seems to be very well built. Lots of grease in the right spots. Note - Check to make sure you get the new version with a line roller bearing versus a bushing. Feels very heavy duty! I used to own an older USA made Slammer. This one seems better built. It also feels like it turns better. Con but not really - The reel is heavy and isn’t as smooth as my Shimano Sustain FG 6000 or Shimano Stella SW 4000 or 6000. But this isn’t why I bought it. It will be a workhorse at the surf and jetties and will not be babied. I got it for less than $200 total and that is such a great deal! I will update this review over time.
