   I got this combo deal awhile back and wanted to thoroughly try it before leaving a review. Honestly, when I first got it, it seemed light and cheap, but over the years using this reel, its been amazing. I have caught tons of rockfish and also pulled up a tuna with it. If they are ever on sale again, I definitely will get another one.

   So I have been waiting to write a review on this product, for when I really got to test it out. I purchased the squall 30LW combo and took it with me on a deep sea fishing trip. We headed out 20-25 miles to do some snapper and grouper fishing. I brought this rod for grouper. A adjusted the drag to fully locked with no problems. Tested it by having a friend pull the line and it seemed to work flawlessly. I was using 60lb mono, with a 4oz weight to get to the reef. I dropped the line and it came off the spool with no effort. First fish was a 25 inch gag grouper, that was NO problem cranking up with this combo. FINALLY I got to put it to the test, and put aside my worry that it would handle a decent sized fish. 35in gag grouper took the bait and lost to this reel. Man am I happy with this combo. Handled the fish as I had hoped for, didn’t lock up. Even under the pressure of a good sized fish, I was able to crank without fault. The level wind continued to do its job throughout the fight. This rod will definitely be going with me on any future trips. Anyone looking for a nice combo that can handle (i think) up to 60lb mono this is it. The reel has 20lbs of drag, and the rod is rated for 20-50lb line. With the drag locked down, the rod and reel both handled exceptionally well under the pressure! Attached is the 35in grouper thanks to the Penn Squall 30LW Combo!

   I was very disappointed when I opened the box. Came what I would call more than used the pole was all scratched and one of the eyes was bent. As for the reel it looked like it was thrown in the dirt and gravel. I will not buy a reel and rod combination from here again.

   Squall 50 level wind and 6’6 rod combo,Fishing for grouper and snapper in NE Fl , put 80 lb braid and been very successful, love the level wind , as anyone who uses it know without level wind the braid will cut you to bone if you are trying to even out spool and fish runs , had extremely large Goliath grouper coming to boat then he spit the bait , a 10 lb Amberjack that had ate my bait then got eaten, reeled in a crushed and scale AJ, this is a lightweight and strong combo

   Purchased this setup to go after snapper in the gulf. It handled everything very well with 50lb braid with a 50lb topshot. Brought up plenty of grouper as well. No need to spend big money to get just the right reel and rod because you just found it. Buy this set up and you will be happy. Saved $20 on pennoutlet.com’s over local shops but did have to wait a week or so for it to arrive.

   I never thought of buying a rod and reel combo without holding it in my hand first, but didn’t have the time to do so for a upcoming trip. So after reading a few reviews I hit the buy now button and didn’t regret doing it. I do a lot of trolling in the gulf of of century Florida and needed a new setup due to the last rod I had broke off a eye ring. This setup worked perfectly all day. While trooling over rock piles in about 8′ of water we met our limit of 2 gags per person in about 3 hour! Thanks Pen and pennoutlet.com for a great deal and super fast delivery!!!

   Like many of the other reviews will tell you, this thing is not shipped to arrive intact, it was shipped in a clear plastic bag that was mostly coming off. Mine arrived with one bent guide, which I fixed, I call that lucky compared to some.

   As the combo itself goes, it is very nice. I always liked Penn as a kid, and I’m getting back into fishing with my daughter and I needed something with a little more power than my old, ragged saltwater spinning setup. You can cast with it, to a point. This one may not be the best for it, you can at least get it out a little ways. I have it spooled with 50lb braid and end with 50lb mono leader.

   Absolutely amazing rod and reel! Super sensitive but very strong. Used it with 80lb branded line with a 60lb leader. Worked when deep sea jogging off the coast of Maine and the sensitivity allowed me to put fish everyone on the boat combined. Easily felt fish 350’ down in a strong current and hauled but several large pollock at once.

   Only complaints are the bolts that attach the clamp to the rod kept coming loose and the fighting butt cover popped off immediately and fell into the ocean. Definitely plan on using some lock tight on the bolts. As far as the butt goes I use a fighting belt so it is not an issue.
