I wanted to love this as it is a great brand. Unfortunately, it was packaged poorly and arrived with the tip broken off. Really no excuse here…better care should be taken to secure the item. To be fair this could have been the result of shipping. In that case I suggest beefing up the packing materials or change services. I am having a replacement sent and am returning this one. Disappointed because I won’t have it for the trip I have planned.
Update: Second one arrived in perfect condition. Full recovery from the seller, and kudos to pennoutlet.com for allowing me to return and they sent a replacement right away. Arrived in time for a planned trip.
Now, to the product…this is typical Penn quality. The reel is smooth, with positive controls. The rod is sturdy and the whole thing looks great. This is a great budget combo, especially for occasional deep sea fishers. This will definitely handle your ocean catch.

This pole is junk from head to toe. Tip broke twice. Reel garbage drag sucks both operating and functional it’s self

Great combo for the money. The tip is sensitive enough to feel fine bites from fish like haddock that tend to just nibble. But the rod has enough back bone to swing 16-20 oz jigs.

Reel ok, but rod is horrible. Reel seemed to be ok but only got to use it to loose two descent sized fish. Since both of my first two fish broke the line due to the rod. I bought this to go fishing on a charter boat in Mexico waters below San Diego. My first two fish snapped my expensive line rated well above the weight of the fish. I then found out why: The metal ring for eyelet was missing. This caused the line to cut through the plastic which made my $30 line break and actually stripped it. This pole has metal inserts for the eyelets that either aren’t there when you receive the pole or that can fall out at any time while fishing. The metal ring for eyelet was missing when my pole was received, but I didn’t notice this. I had to use a rented pole for the rest of the fishing trip. Mine is being returned. Get a pole with solid metal eyelets or you will regret it when catching descent sized fish. Reel is also attached to the rod with plastic. I didn’t notice this in the pictures before buying the Rod and Reel combo. I hope this review helps. I don’t mind paying extra for quality. How about you?
