   Super reel for the money! Awesome quality and performance! Landed two six foot and one seven foot shark the first night I took her out. Great for the boat or the pier. Off shore dolphin fishing with shovels or without. Deep dropping onto shipwrecks. I’ve yet to find something this reel can’t handle. I will be purchasing more!

   Unfortunetly I will not get a chance to play with this reel for awhile because it’s a gift. From what I read it is a very sturdy and bulldog of a reel. If you google Top reels for shark fishing this makes everyone’s list. Can’t for Christmas to see my dad open this gift!

   Unfortunately Penn reels are not made in America anymore this one is made in China however it seems to be very well made, only time and a very large fish will tell. I believe it is still made with good quality for penn reels.

    Great reel, Solid, built like a tank. The low gear ratio of the L2 was just what I needed.. I bought 2 for kite fishing from shore. These reels need to handle not only the pull of the fish but the pull of the kite.. A senator with a higher gear ratio would have been difficult to work with. But the L2’s 2.1:1 gear ratio and 21 lbs. of max drag proved to be just the thing needed to get some traction on the combined force of the fish and kite. If the weight of a reel is a critical factor for you, this might not be the reel for you. Specs list it as weighing 44 ounces.

    I’ve use this reel, along with the Penn Mariner stand up rod, for a few trips “deep jigging” wrecks in Florida. Both this reel and the Penn Mariner rod handled Tuna, King Mackerel, Grouper and Amber-jacks flawlessly! Although the retrieve ratio on this Penn reel is about 2.5 to 1, the torque and power more than make up for the speed, especially when yo-yo-ing heavy jigs in deep water. Thanks for a great deal on a super Penn Reel.

    The Penn Senator is renowned for its powerful performance over decades. When I acquired this brand new one, the assembly process was a breeze. It boasts a very traditional look, and I was genuinely excited to take it out for some fishing. The reel’s weight is substantial, making it suitable for trolling and targeting large game fish. Initially, the gear cranked smoothly for about half a day, and I had some successful catches during my first long-range deep-sea fishing trip. However, to my surprise, it suddenly became impossible to crank in the middle of the fishing trip. A deckhand explained that it might be due to an issue with the interior gear. I couldn’t help but think, “Dude, it’s a brand new reel. How could it be like this?” This experience left me quite disappointed regarding its durability. I’m unsure whether this problem is unique to this particular Penn reel or if it applies to all Penn Senator 115 size reels. Now I’m rather hesitant about using the Penn Senator for future fishing trips, as the reel malfunction wasted valuable fishing time.
