I read a lot of poor reviews for this combo, but for the price I thought it was worth a shot. What I received was a good sturdy pole with a Senator reel for less then I have paid for the reel alone. The shipping packaging was overkill, therefore it arrived in excellent condition. Go for it.

used this setup to catch King fish in the Gulf and it worked great. Then I Bought it up north and fished lake sturgeon. Pulled in big fish all weekend. Biggest being a 61″ 68lb. The tip is not that sensitive but usually bigger poles are not.

I was worried about this combo due to the number of negative comments but upon recieving it, the only thing i didnt like was, the box was poorly taped. The rod itself is beautiful. Came perfectly intacked. I would definitely recommend this.

Package arrived well protected and undamaged. Looks like a great setup. Can’t wait to add some line and see how it does at sea! Four stars for now, at least until I catch a big fish!

I ordered three combos. When they arrived, two of the rods were damaged in shipping. Each of the two had a crushed guide in the middle of the rod and the end guide was bent backwards. Arranged for replacements and they were sent to me as promised. Again, one of the end guides was slightly bent. Decide to live with it – figured it would get more abuse on the boat. The first time I hooked a fish with one of the rods, three of the plastic rings in the guides popped out. Loss was $20 of braid, $15 lure and the Mahi Mahi. The return period was expired with pennoutlet.com so I contacted Penn directly. Submitted my warranty replacement request with pictures, three months later – silence.
The end result is marginal quality + poor packaging + no customer service (Penn) = a waste of time and money. Grew up fishing with Penn, it is sad.

I have used older Penn Reels for years and they are still as good as the day I bought them with annual cleaning and servicing. I got this combo and right out of the box you could tell there was no grease or oil in the reel and the gears were grinding just turning the handle. The freespool was also not…free spooling. Sent right back to pennoutlet.com. For those familiar with the older Penn’s this just seemed like a plastic toy to me. I’m sure some may argue but this is my observation. The Rod this comes with seems decent but can’t say anything at all positive about reel. The only reason I didn’t give it 1 star was I want to have some hope that this was a fluke and after some greasing and oiling the reel would come back to life but right out of the box and given the overall feel of the reel, I wouldn’t bet on it or would want to ever depend on it. I went to a store to look at these in person since I couldn’t believe this experience and while they didn’t have the same mechanical problems, these reels just feel cheap. Sad to see how cheap Penn products have gotten unless you are buying their high end International reels.

Ok i was so excited to get my new combo, until i opened it. Top eyelet was damaged, a little dented up and inserts out. Sucks because I am going fishing in the morning, so running out to pick something up at dicks. I guess ill call Penn on Monday, as for the quality looks great can’t wait to use it.
