I normally buy Shimano reels and now I know why. I bought this reel because I could not find another Shimano Baitrunner anywhere. The Penn Liveliner felt stiff right out of the box. The first frustration is the spool did not have a line clip. I surf fish with 15′ rods that I have to break down when traveling so I reel all the line back onto the reel. The spool had no line clip. Wth? I used the reel twice. The first time, it felt stiff when reeling in small whiting. On the second trip, I hooked a small 3′ shark. While fighting the fish, the reel handle locked up and would not turn at all. I had to handline the fish in the rest of the way. I’m assuming they use cheap plastic gears in this reel because why else would it perform so terribly. Cheap junk. Sent the reel back and I will never buy another Penn reel again. Shimano all the way!

Within 6 casts of this reel, it completely failed to reel in with any load on the reel. What a disappointment to have hiked in to my favorite beach and have this happen.
