These small Penn Fathom star drag reels are built like tanks. If you have use for a tough small capacity star drag reel with a brute powerful drag this small Fathom would be hard to beat.

Took the fathom 25N Star Drag out for a extended halfday trip. Loaded the reel with 65 lbs PP and a 66 yard (198 foot) 40 lbs mono top shot. The reel was smooth and quite; very light and easy to hold all day. I was surprized I was able to cast the reel further than my Shimano Trinidad 16A. The line peels off the reel smootly. I’m impressed and can’t wait to take the reel Yellow-tail fishing in March. Great purchase.

This reel is perfect for flylining live baits on 15-25lb line for bass Bonita barracuda etc and cans handle a yellowtail if you’re lucky to get bit by one. Great reel.

Non mi è piaciuto perché appena pochi minuti usato è partita la frizione. E non ha più funzionato.

Paired this reel with a heavy action 7ft Ugly Stik Tiger Lite rod and 50 lb test Spiderwire braid. Landed a 25 pound Bull Red off the pier at Gulf State Park that didn’t really test the rod or reel. Next day I hooked up an approximately six foot, 130 pound bull shark that put the rig and me to the test. I broke a sweat but the rod and reel handled the shark easily. Had to max out the drag and really dig in with the rod to turn him when he ran for the pier. The shark pulled well over a hundred yards of line at fairly high drag settings and another forty or fifty yards at max drag when he got spooked at the pier and made another run. Got the shark to the pier for pictures and cut him loose in about ten minutes. The drag was smooth as silk no matter what pressure was put on it. Impressive reel and one of the best reels on the market in that price range IMO. I plan on putting this rod and reel to some heavy use this year. We’ll see if they hold up long term.

This is a very good reel. You can cast it so far, as a matter of fact I can just about throw it out of line. That being my only complaint. I wish the line capacity was bigger, because if you throw most of the line off of it, and get hung up and break off, your just about out of line. Might be great for guys that use braid.

Complete sheerness and impeccable reel. A master of artistry and design I recommend this reel highly as I purchased it as a upgrade from the Penn Squall 15 casting special. Though this reel is heavier than the squall, the aluminum design and thinner spool allows for more yards of like to be held and drag and clicking system are superb I would highly recommended buying this reel and paring it with a 12 foot rod such a Penn Carnage or Bass pro breakwater rod for maximum casting distance. However, it is a pain in the ass to get birds nest, but tweaking it and setting the spool tensioner with adjusting the magnets I am easily able to cast over 100 yards with this and get my bait out where i need it too. Ps my biggest fish I caught was on the surf a 4 ft shark with 20lb Momoi Hi catch mono, that stuff is crazy thin and abrasion resistant I was able to fit 360 yards on this spool and the drag kept up thank you penn

Just went out on a halfday to break in the Fathom15 and the thing was casting great, tossing the Tady AA surface iron a mile. The reel took probably about 250 yds of 50lb powerpro braid and probably around 20 yds of 30lb mono topshot. Had no problem dragging in the bonito and calico with ease. Even ended up hooking into a yellow and the rod I what was bent over and probably coulda used one slightly more heavy duty but the reel did absolutely great. I also had brought my relatively new Daiwa Lexa on the same rod as well and ended up not even touching it because I was loving the fathom too much.

Seriously can’t wait to get this thing out on the water. It feels great and it holds a lot more line than i have on other reels. Going deep sea fishing out of Ciscos in Ventura this week and then for some yellowtail and tuna over the summer out of H&M. Let’s see how this holds up. Will update later
Update: just got off my 3/4 day trip. Getting used to a reel without a level wind is super quick and easy. I’ve never used a conventional reel for casting before and with only 2 brakes I only got a backlash once. By the end of the trip, I felt like a pro. I’m sure with more practice I can even take those breaks off and cast over mountains. I HIGHLY recommend this reel to the person that wants a great casting reel without the huge price tag. This reel is great at taking in line quickly. When I’m fishing down to 300 feet, the boat isn’t waiting for me to get up anymore. Im waiting on them. Couldn’t be happier with this reel!!!
