went sea fishing for the first time for salmon in s.f. bay area. the doods on the boat were impressed by this reel said it’s better than any of the ones they use on the boat for customers and even themselves and they must have had 30 rod n reels on the boat. caught an 18 and a 22 lb.er this thing is meant for stuff a lot bigger than salmon they said but over kill is better than under acheiving.

Bought Penn US113N for use on my boat locally (Puget Sound) and for my travel arsenal. For travel I matched it up with a two piece Ugly Stik (BWC2201270). First trip with it was to Sea of Cortez where we had it loaded with 250 yards of 40 lb Ande Pink. We used this outfit as our ballyhoo casting rig when sailfish got into the trolling spread. It performed well and we landed (and released) three sailfish with this outfit. Was very effective for the 80 to 100 lb sailfish we landed. For larger fish braid backing will be required to increase the spool capacity as 250 yards seemed to be lower limit of line needed for the quarry we we hunting. Overall great reel and I am expecting to keep it in the arsenal for a long time.

I love this reel! It casts a mile (once you learn how) and has great line capacity. I would try getting it locally though because it’s not any cheaper on pennoutlet.com and the one I received (and promptly returned) was used (and sold as new). It even had salt water corrosion on the reel clamp bolts and dirty grease everywhere. Not cool pennoutlet.com.
edited to add: I totally agree with “Grumpy’s” review as well. This is a fantastic reel and the quality is top notch. I have 2 of them and did upgrade the handle and bridge assembly (and magged the reel) but it would fish great just as it is. I also have the exact same setup as “Grumpy”, the 12′ Ocean Master and toss 6oz and bait with 50lb braid tied to 50lb mono. I think i’m going to buy a couple more!

I must admit that I have quite the collection of reels, and like to rotate them. So I might fish with a reel about once a year, depending on where I am going and what species I hope to hook up with. The first time I took this out, I hooked up with what I believe to be a grouper based on the way it fought. About 10 minutes into the fight, the drag broke as I was lifting up on the reel and the reel spooled and the line broke. What was weird is it was allowing drag to go out at the time. Unfortunately it was outside the warranty period even though it had only been used once. I had a local tackle shop do the repair as the guy who owns it has been repairing my gear for years and I’ve never had any issues with his repairs. This weekend, on the third trip for this reel, it did the same thing. So now I have a $300 paper weight on my desk, and make it a point to tell all my customers about my experience and how I will never buy another Penn reel. It’s not the cost of the reel as much as it’s the cost of losing a fight to a monster fish that upsets me the most. Unfortunately from other reviews I’ve read on other websites, this is a common issue with this reel, where the metal grinds together and the reel seizes. You would think that Penn knows this is a defect in the reel and would gladly fix the reel, but no dice.

Bought this reel for a bottom set up for fluke tog and seabass and stripers and blues. i got the reel and it didnt reel right and was grinding and binding up i sent it back and exchanged it for a fathom star drag 8xnld. The fathom will hold 250 yards of 30lb braid makes 30lbs of drag is all metal and its only a third the size of the senator.
