   Nice damn rod.my dad had one and i was a bit jealous of his shiny new rod so i bought one of my own and love it!!!…fiberglass is usually my go to material for a rod ( im a bit rough on gear) but this thing is made of graphite and it definitely gets the job done..talk about strong. First fish i hooked on it was a 20+ lbs sting ray. Swore it was gonna break but nope, did the deed..!!!! Did i mention its good lookin too.

   I do however have one con regarding this rod .no guide on the bottom half of the rod. From time to time i like to break the rod down with the line still set up (tie on a leader and go). But with this i have to set all the way up every time i go out because once the two halfs seperate the line is comming straight out of the reel and is not threaded through that all important first guide on the bottom half..

   It doesnt lose a star because thats just my preference. .

   Edit- I got a replacement and the process was easy. My new rod seems to work great with no issues and no breaks yet. I look forward to testing this rod on some big fish and updating here to elaborate further in the future. Below is original post with what was at the time a One Star review. Will add video soon. Never got to use this rod. Was adjusting drag, pulling line with my bare hand, screw was still in wobbly-loose stage of adjustment. SNAP broke off between 3rd and 4th eyelet. Really disappointed, my friends have recommended Penn for years. I am terribly disappointed in my first Penn product.

   There were a lot of one star reviews, but I decided to chance it. Of course, like almost every rod shipped by pennoutlet.com, it came in beat up. I carefully, or so I thought, inspected rod and saw no problems. The rod was for my son and I didn’t get it to him for a couple of months. When he was running the line through the eyelets, he noticed that one was popped loose from blank, as can be seen in pics. He builds rods as a hobby, occasionally, and said it looks like there is no thread, just epoxy. I would have expected the eyelet to have been bent over, as has happened in the past, due to bad packaging, but not popped loose from the blank. Not impressed for the price.

   So far, I only used this rod during a 2 week vacation in Florida. I used it quite extensively during these 2 weeks in North Hutchinson Island. I paired it with a Penn Spinfisher V 4500 spooled with 20lb braid connected to a 25lb Seaguar fluorocarbon leader. The rod performed great in the surf trowing 1 to 1-1/2oz bucktails, 4 to 5” jerkbaits and metal lures. I caught 20 to 27” snooks, small jacks, many Bluefish (biggest one was 35”). The medium powered 8′ rod handled all these fish great. The only thing I don’t like is the raw finish on the graphite. It looks good, but I’m wondering about longterm durability. It should be ok but you just need to take care of it when traveling around. Also make sure to wash the guides after saltwater use so that they don’t rust over time. Adding a soft soap to wash it down really gets rid of the salt residue. Good backbone for a medium rod.

    Getting annoyed the way they ship this rod. Just got my replacement glad I never shipped back the first one yet. First rod the bottom sections main guide was totally shot and the aluminum oxide insert peice was missing. Replacement rod came today with a broken tip end and the aluminum oxide insert is nowhere to be found. I’m able to peice the two together and ship back a broken pole but I also notice on the replacement the graphite inside looks like it has a Crack inside… they need to ship in tubes not shotty careless fedex method. I recommend going to a store and finding this rod. This has been an interesting experience ordering a surf rod through pennoutlet.com. Great feeling rod but just keep an eye out on any flaws. I may return the somewhat good sections also expecially with a noticeable Crack and who knows how far it goes. Buy 2 or 3 at a time you might get 1 that works for you.

    The item arived superfast (by tracking), but was misplaced by the delivery person, so I found it couple of days later and couple of blocks away. pennoutlet.com was great, they did not charge me and suggested to keep the rod if I found it later :-). Well I did but only to be used once…This rod looks great and feels fast and strong. It is listed to hold 20 pound mono/30 pound braid. On my first trip I used 15 pound mono with crocodile lure to get some bonito. The lure got tangled in the kelp. I was sure the line would break first, but I was wrong. The bottom piece of the rod snapped and about10 inch piece broke off into water. It was floating like a balsa wood! Well, this rod is weak. I also noticed that the top eye was somehow uneven/tilted, not sure if on purpose (see photo). Well I do not recomend this rod. I got Ugly Stick instead, lets see how that will hold. Still I glued it together with a glass insert (see 2 nd photo), it may work with super thin line for catching bait and small fish. After all I got it for free :-))) Howvet I would never put on it 30 pound braid and loose a yellowtail or a nice bonito. Penn, your reels are great but this rod is a failure 🙁
